Abstrakt

The presentation begins with discussion and examples of masonry building damage during the 2011 M6.3 Christchurch, New Zealand, earthquake. This leads to consideration of inertia force paths during an earthquake in a simple masonry building and the issues that need addressing during a seismic retrofit. These include: face-loaded walls, floor and roof diaphragms and their connections to walls, wall in-plane resistance, and the building foundation. Four possible approaches to retrofitting are then introduced and explained, followed by examples of retrofitted masonry buildings in New Zealand. The conclusion consists of a challenge to integrate retrofit structure with existing architectural qualities. The presentation aims to stimulate thoughts and questions about seismic retrofitting from the perspectives of both architects and structural engineers.


Biografija predavača

Andrew Charleson is currently an Adjunct Professor at the School of Architecture, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He has taught the subject of architectural structures in lecture theatre and studio settings as an Associate Professor at the same university for over 30 years. Prior to that he worked as a structural engineer.


Andrew has two main strands of research interest. The first strand, how structure can enrich architecture, was brought together in the book Structure as Architecture: a Source Book for Architects and Structural Engineers. The first edition was published by Elsevier in 2005, and the second by Routledge in 2014.


The second research strand relates to earthquake engineering. Andrew is the former Director of the Earthquake Hazard Centre, a NGO that disseminates earthquake damage mitigation information to developing countries. In 2008 his book Seismic Design for Architects: Outwitting the Quake was published by Elsevier, and he is the co-author of Seismic Isolation for Architects, published by Routledge in 2016.
